WHIST.
TO THE EDITOR. Sib,-" A Lover of Whist's " reply totho article from the Eclectic, which I sent you, escaped me till to-day, -when my attention was drawn to it by the correspondence on the subject in this morning's issue. I take this opportunity of thanking "Whist Philosopher" and "A Penitent Lady " for their good wishes, and the sensible view of the article they have taken. I hardly feel called upon to take up the cudgels on behalf of the original writer, as I should think the fact that it passed unchallenged in two such high-class journals as the Spectator and the Eclectic is in itself ample proof that it needs no defence by me. As for " A Lover of ' Whist/ I am sorry she should have been matter of fact enough to take to herself ] such a palpable piece of triendly humour. Mark Twain took the character of Tom '• Sawyer from three individual boys, by blending their traits into one character, ! and I daro say the writer of the article in question has acted upon similar line 3. — 1 I am, &c, H.
