HUNTERVILLE NOTES.

» (Contributed.) On Saturday the election of the Li* censing Committee and the Local option vote for this District took place, Mr Tennent from Marton was the Returning Officer, and the Bank of New Zealand's Office was used as a Polling Booth, great interest was taken in the election. The following gentlemen were candidates : — Messrs W. Fergusson, W. A. Floyd, I. Johnston, F. Marshall, E. McGiegor, A. G. Simpson, and W. Wilson. Every available vote was hunted up, and as the time came for the declaration of the poll quite a little excitement was shown, the booth was surrounded by 6.30, when Mr Tennent declared the result as follows :— A. G. Simpson 44, W. Fergusson 38, W. Wilson 38, W. Floyd 33, E. McGregor 32, 1. Johnston 26, F. Marshall 25. Mr Simpson, who is deservedly popular in this district, was heartily congratulated on being returned at the head of the poll, he made a neat little speech thanking those who had supported him, and hoping that his actions whilst on the Committee would prove that their confidence was not misplaced, &c. &c. The other candidates who were present also thanked their supporters. Mr Tennent afterwards declared the result of the Local option vote, which was against the increase of Publicans' Licenses, Accommodation Licenses, and Bottle Licenses, so that this question is settled for the next 3 years. On Saturday afternoon we had a heavy thunder storm which commenced about 4 p.m. and lasted for an hour, heavy rain falling. On Sunday it commenced raining very gently at about 9.30 a.m., and continued all day, towards evening the glass was standing at about 29*10 and heavy rain set in. lam afraid that all chance of burning for this year is over, those who have bush fallen will have to be out of their money for another 1 12 months, which will be a great hardship in many cases, particularly to those who have just taken up land. The Railway Contractors are pushing ahead and doing great work.
