LOCAL AND GENERAL.

There waa a clean sheet, at ths E.M» Oourfc yesterday morning, Mr F. R. Field, one of the three Wanganui candidates who successfully passed their matriculation examination for ehe NewZealand University, is a master at the Collegiate School. We understand that the Sev, Mr Harvey, principal of the Collegiate School, has made arrangements for chartering the Tubu* for an excursion pionic up the river one day next week. Referring to tins address recently delivered by Mr Donald Eeid, as chairman of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce, in which that gentleman expressed himself strongly against the proposed big borrowing boom, the Lyttelton Times says;— "Mr Donald Reid's creed, then, may bo set down as shattered nervos with an Atkinsonian bias." There was a capital muster of the Naval Artillery at Government parade last night, 44 members answering to roll oall, The company now numbers 55 all told, several lax members having been discharged and their places filled by men who give promise of bficoming active, efficient, and dependable Volunteers. The St. Andrew Kilwinning Lodge of Freemasons meet at the Masonic Hall at •7.30 o'clock to-night. The nominations for tho Wanganui Licensing Committee close to»day. We have not heard of any fresh candidates. Apparently the Temperance party do not intend to try conolusionß again this year. Mr Drew haa supplied a splendid set of Masonic jewels to the order of the Foxton Kilwinning Lodge, which, the local paper says, have given most complete satisfaction to the master and officers of the Lodge. Messrs Hill and Poole have presented a 1 handsome marble clock for the Colonial J Prize Firing Competition. The trophy is I on view at Mr Forbes's establishment in the Avenue. The following is one of "iEgles " yarns . — " They wore both blue ribbon men, and on the third day of their walking tour they made one of the most hospitable home stations in the Western district, lb was a regular « baker,' and the water by the way had been as scarce as angels' visits. Unknowingly M'Longwool handed tbem tvo glasses of milk punch, and unknowingly they drained them. The tourist with the mos.t blue ribbon showing at his buttonhole looked at M'Longwool for a moment, and then from his lips, atill moist with the nectar of the gods, burst forth the words, 'By Jove ! what a cow.' " To prevent any misconception, we may state that the railway wharf, from which it has been announced that tho Tuhua will Btart, on her excursion trip at 8 o'olock this morning, is the town whaif. The te:m "railway wharf" was formerly applied to the wharf at Fastown, tho demolition of which took place some time ago. It is hoped that Purakinowill be reached in time to enable (lie return to be made to town by 6 o'clock in tlie evening. Wo stoppages wiil b« mado on tho waj', .ave for tho purposes of taking in or landing passengers We wish iho party a p!ea.ant trip. The directors have decided to mnko the Tu-'U.t ava: lable for privato excursion pirtie?, and a uniform fco of £12 per day has determined upon for -Sundays and week days alike.

For the three vacancies on the Education Board the only nomination so far received is that of Mr Thynne, of Foxton. On Friday night the Juno Dramatic Company will give a special performance, under the patronage of the Wanganui Caledonian Society. The drama o'losen for the occasion is one dear to the heart, o f ali Scotia's sons, viz., " Jeannie Deans." Mies June will appear as Jeannie Deans, a part for which she is renowned. Tom Thumb, the diminutive New Zealander, will hold a lovee to-night i:i premises opposite the Priucess Theatre, Ridgway-street. ' Persons desirous of interviewing the Lilliputiau gentleman will he required to contribute the small fee of one shilling to the attendant at the door. The Proporiy Tax assessment roll for the Borough of Wanganui reaches £500,05Q, We had the pleasure yesterday of seeing two very handsome prize medals mado by Mr Hugh Black for the winners respectively in the competitions for the Irish jig and best bagpipe music at the late Caledonian Bports. The medal for the Irish jig, won by Mr MoGregor, of Greymouth, is of silver, oval shaped, with a wreath of shamrocks eurs rounding a harp, the ribbon being of McKenzie tartan, with a small harp between the buckles. The medal for the best bagpipe music, which goes to Napier, having been won by Mr Halliburton of that place, is beautifully designed, representing a round garter with the bt. Andrew's cross in gold, surmounted by a thistle in silver. The medals may bo Eeen in Mr Black's window during to-day. By the last San Francisco mail we received a letter from Mr H. P. Hubbard, proprietor of the International Newspaper Agency, with regard to two advertisements now appearing in the New Zealand papers — one of a New Yqrk concern under the name of " Pembeftcni, Ayer, & C0.," and the other of the " Norman Electric Light Company, of Philadelphia, Pa." Mr Hubbard says of these : " X have inv-astigated the character of theee concerns (both "agency" and advertisers), and find them both unmitigated frauds and swindles." Referring to the Philadelphia concern, the New York Tribune's correspondent wires on January Sth last :— " Mayor Smith this morning received a lettor from the Inspec-tor-General of Police of New South Wales, and a eitizen of New Zealand, asking parti--oulars about the 'Norman Electric Light Company, of Philadelphia,' which has been advertising extensively in Sydney and other parts of tho colony. The authorities answered that the company is doubtless one of the schemes of Bmil Bassett, of New York, who, under the name of Marsh Bas* sett, was detected in carrying on a bogus watch business in thia city, and is now awaiting trial in the United States Court." The Go-Ahead landed yesterday ia good order a consignment of 100 rams bred by Mr E. B. Anderson, of Christchurch. Theae rams are purebred Lincolns, and are greatly admired for size and quality. The wool is long, lustrous, and fine, whilst the sheep is everything that can be desired. A consignment of rams from the same floak gave every satisfaction to the purchasers last season, so we feel certain the sheep juat arrived will be of great benefit to the district. Messrs F. R. Jackson and Co. will sell them at the St. Hill«*Btreet yardß on Wednesday next. Mr U. Alexander, who has on many * occasions como prominently before the public in connection with local theatrical performances and entertainments, has become sublessee of the Princess Theatre, the entire management of which will in future eest entirely wi f h him. As Mr Alexander possesses some knowledge ef the profession, and is active and enterpriaiog, we feel quite sure that ib will be no fault of his if the rest companies that pass up and down the colony do not tnrn their attention in the direction of Wanganui. Already we understand Mr" Alexander haa opened up communication with Messrs Bignold and Allison's Opera Company, consisting of some 60 performers, at present performing in Dunedin, with the view of their opening for a short subscription season here at Easter. The occupations of newly-elected members of the House of Commons have been analysed. There should be no laok of legal knowledge in . the new Parliament, for the law has far more representatives than any other profession or pursuit; In all, there are 133 memb ars who may be generally described as lawyers, 110 barristers, and 23 solicitors. Only a comparatively small proportion of the 133 are actually in practice, but Btill the whole number must be put under the head of their profession. Of the class very comprehensively described as " gentry and landowners," there are 71 ; but there are 46 "sons and brothers of peers," and probably most of these might be ranked under the " gentry and landowning " head, as, too, might many of the 25 bankers. Of manufacturers there aro 69, the manufacturers of be*r not included, for there are besides 24 brewers and distillers. The army has 57 representatives, though the navy is less well provided— only seven naval officers beiog on the rolls There are just a dozen farmers and agriculturists. The journalistic calling has a considerable representation, no few than 34 members of that profession in all. We have received from Messrs T. Kens • nedy Macdonald and 00. the last number of their Wellington Landed Property Guide, which should be in the hands of all interested in landed estate, as the publication contains a mass of valuable information as ' well aa a long list of properties, farms, stations, and township allotments for sale by the publishers. The Guide, ia forwarded freB each month to any addresß on application to the publishers, Messrs T. Kennedv Macdonald and Co., Panama'- street, Wels lington. HAVE NOT HEAFD A SINCfLE COMPLAINT. Baldock, Herts, January 4th, 1883 " Gentlemen, —Perhaps it would be appropriate to state that it gives me great pleasure to push and advance the sales of your medicines on account of- their worth. I have not had or heard a single complaint about your medicinos since I have sold them, but, o the other hand, unbounded testimony as to their worth, therefor© I cau with confidence bring tham into public notice. During 1882 1 sold 11 J dozens of the Syrup, and 7_- dozen Pills. This, I think, taking into account that the inhabitants are. under 2000, and there are two other agents in town, with give you an idea as to how it is appreciated 1 here. — Faithfii-ly yours, " H. J. Jzzard, Tat. M d. Vendor."
