AUCKLAND.

July 27. The proprietor of the Kamo Colliery has offered the captain of the ship Dunkeld good freight to take coal instead of ballast, on a voyage to San Francisco. Judge Gillies to-day refused an application for a new trial in the slander case Crawford v. Johnstone, heard at the last Civil Sessions, when a verdict was returned for defendant. The Judge said that though it was proved that the defendant had made a false statement affecting plaintiff's chastity, he had done so in confidence to the girls he employed, and surrounding circumstances showed that the statement was not made maliciously. Thefeud between the Education Board and the Grrafton Eoad School Committee over the appointment of Miss Whyte, pupil-teacher, as assistant teacher of the District School, without the Committee's consent, has entered a new phase. The Committee, ignoring the new teacher, obtained the legal opinion of Messrs Hesketh and Eichmond, who replied that the Board's action was unlawful. Mr E.
