Waverley-Waitotara Guineas.— Nominations for this race close at Mr Ballam's Commercial Hotel, Waverley, on Tuesday, Ist March, at 8 p.m. The stakes are £105. Sale of Privileges. — The privileges of the course at the Wanganui Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting, will be sold by Mr F. E. Jaekson, at his yards, at two o'clock to-morrow. Fishing Excursion. — A party of about fifteen gentlemen chartered the steamer Waitara on Saturday and proceeded over the bar on a piscatorial excursion, intending to return yesterday afternoon. Wanganui Cup. — The names of the Hon W. Eobertson's horses, Natator and On Dit; and Messrs Mason and. Vallance's Eandwick, were added to the list of the entries for this race published on Saturday. The Rain, — Early on Sunday morning a complete change of weather took place, and a considerable quantity of rain fell during the day and on Sunday night. The showers were quite heavy enough to be of great benefit to the grassland. Trotting Match. — The trotting match on Saturday afternoon, between , Messrs Evans' and Kohn's ponies, excited a good deal of interest. The . course chosen was from St John's Hotel to the Bridge. The horses were ridden by their owners, and the race was a warm one. Mr Evans' pony won by about 40 yards.

Bowing. — Considerable interest is taken in the crews training for the various events in the approaching regatta. Their practice is very carefully watched, and their merits discussed with much warmth by many admirers of aquatics. Euatangata Sale.— An alteration has been made in the time-table of the excursion trains which are to run from town to Wangaehu, on the 2nd, 4th, and oth instant, the days on which the great sale of stock at Messrs Owen and Lethbridge's Euatangata Estate will be held. The trains leave town at 8.50 a.m., and return at 6 p.m., instead of 4.50 as previously advertised. Westmere. — Although the prohibition with regard to using the Westmere water for other than domestic purposes was necessary in view of the possible continuance of the dry weather, we are informed "that the lake had, up to the setting in of the rain, at least a month's supply before the level to which the Corporation are allowed to draw would have been reached. Little Schafer. — The celebrated G-erman traveller, Frederick Christian Schafer, who has been in nearly every country, has come to grief at Sydney. He was found hatless and bootless, shrieking and foaming at the mouth in a fit. A short time since his friends there among the Masonic brethern paid his expenses home to Germany, and sent him to Melbourne, but he found his way back. He is nqjv (Considered deranged, and was locked up (for his own protection. The Bench considered it a pitiable case. Schafer is totally unable to earn a living, being deformed. Two doctors certified that he was of unsound mind, and he was sent to the Callen Park Asylum. Eegattas. — The defeats sustained by the Australian Champions in England seem to have increased the interest of their countrymen in rowing matters, rather than have diminished it. From a late file of the Sydney Morning Herald, we leam that Mr M. Eush has offered to subscribe one-third of the amount fixed for the Champion Outrigger Eaee at the Grafton Eegatta, and douations of £20 and £o 5s have been made by two other private gentlemen to the same regatta fund. If our local regatta committee's hands were strengthened in a similar manner, there would be no doubt of the success of the regatta, and rowing might stand some chance of assuming the position of favour in Wanganui which the possession of such a noble sheet of water for the practice of the art entitles it to. Blood PoisoisTNG. — A curious case of: blood poisoning is reported from Echuca. Mr Saltmarsh, bookbinder, complained of a small pimple on his lip, which gradually disappeared, but reappeared a couple of days later and increased rapidly in size and virulence. On January 30th he was confined to his bed, when the whole face and head assumed a purplish green hue. The lip split in various places. He was in intense agony next day, and was delirious till three o'clock in the afternoon, when he died. His medical attendants used every known antidode unavailingly. It is surmised that the deceased had been bitten on the lip by some insect and scratched the place with his finger nail, and that coloring matter used in paper ruling was introduced into the wound. He leaves a widow and family entirely destitute.
