TIMARU.
June 12. The Chamber of Commerce yesterday passed a resolution recommending the abolition of the Property Tax, and that taxes on tea, sugar, and school rates be imposed instead. It is estimated that a tax for education of £1 per house, and 5s per head school fee would produce £110,000 nett revenue. The Committee reported m favour of the Land Tax, which was sturdily supported by the Mayor and other members, but eventually it was resolved that neither a Land nor Property Tax was advisable at present.
