LETTERS TO THE EDITOR.
. , . July 23, 186 lt‘ Sir,— Tiirough the medium o,f' your paper, l beg .leave to call the attention of the public generally, to the present state of the drainage, of our town. Although we are better off'for drainage in some places than we were some years ago, still there is great room for'improvement. This will appear from the fact, that close by some of our principal streets there are'Jarge pools-of water which-can get no outlet.* With regard to one locality, near Vic-toria-avenue, there was once a natural watercocrse; which has been, very injudiciously stopped where the ground is lowest; the consequence is, the water must run up hill, or jceep a drain open so- deep : ; that it is both impracticable and dangerous. , So the water mnst lie till'it gets very irhpure, and L believe in no small degree’ affects 'tlie atmosphere we bi-efthe in, along with the inconvenience of having our gardens flooded for one third of the year: . --Wow, sir, as far as I am aware, there is at present no proper' authority to rid us of this sad grievance. The question seems to ; be, are we to remain for years inactive and careless on the subject, unconsciously inhaling the noxious vapour from stagnant waterpools, until the venom of some ravaging disease stick so fast in us, a growing population; the remedy is too late ? "Or are we to bestir ourselves at once, and by going through' the proper course, form some local board; municipality, pr ; ,cor-_ poration ? I would riot venture an opinion as to-what particular system should be adopted here; but I will venture to say, and there cannot be the shadow of a doubt, that if a few of our energetic townsmen (whose affluence has placed time at their disposal) will .give art unlimited. scope to their will soon find ways and means of carrying into effect any object which may be deemed obviously necessary for the health, comfort, and prosperity, of this town and neighbourhood. : 1 trusting these' few'remarks may be some means of helping us a stage further-in advance, ■:vi; I am, &c. . , ,v:- ; Townsman.
