Ball. —The inhabitants of'Wanganui gave a ball to the Officers of the Garrison last Friday evening. It was held in the Rutland Hotel and was well, attended ; the (arrival of the detachment.. ef the ,57th and .the expectation of meeting with a number of-new facesno doubt adding to its attractiveness. It is pleasant to see the inhabitants thus entertaining those gallant defenders of our hearths and homes, to whom they are so much indebted for past favors during a time of peace, and to whom they may be under a still deeper debt of gratitude for services to he yet rendered if there should be a time of war. An excellent supper was served up in the course of the evening- in Mr. Russel J’s,. usual -West* End style; and the accustomed round of toasts was proposed and received with acclamation. Thereafter dancing. was resumed and kept up with great spirit till early in the morning.
