' : of Aberdeen, has been appointed Bakerian Lecturer for this year by the Royal Society of London. Mr. Maxwell has for some years been engaged on researches,into the composition of colours and the nature of colour blindness. He is, we believe, the inventor of an instrument for making mixtures of the colours of the spectrum in definite propoidlons; and one of the most curious of his recent successes is the compositiou of a colour ihich appears, red to one person and green*, another. -each-.cap she was paid the miserable sum of three halfpence. : • The entry of the 78th Highlanders into Edinburgh, on the 24th Feb., was a perfect triumph. The volunteer rifle and artillerymen lined the streets from the railway station to the castle. The Lord Provost and a number of the principal , inhabitants met within the station to receive them, and as soon as the first of the “ belted plaids ” was seen emerging from the station a tremendous shout cf welcome burst forth from the spectators, and hats and handkerchiefs were waved joyfully from every window. A number of gallant 7/ighlandcrs were “relieved” of their guns by obligiug friends, and one athletic civilian, making, a dash at the regimental band, seized hold of the great drum; and, hoisting it aloft, marched on beside the: regiment, much to the astonishment of the band-master. A cargo of herrings has been imported into Peterhead from, Norway, and before the vessel left another had been engaged to bring a.secorid cargo.: These herrings are probablyTo be smoked, it being now impossible to get Scotch herrings for; that purpose. The Retreat House of the Immaculate Conception,”at Leith, was on the 2.lst Feb. “ solemnly blessed” by the Vicar General of Scotland, in the absence of Bishop Gillies. It is intended to be somewhat of the description of a monastery, capable of lodging .upwards of 30 persons, and will cost more than <£3ooo. Gd. 225. to 275. ; and of laid Highland, 10s. to 11s. 9d. per stone of 24 lbs. Gold in Peebleshihe —Gold has- been found among . the quartz detritus in a small mountain rivulet near St. Mary’s Loch. It is in-small nuggets, some of them resembling flattened split peas.
