Before the Japanese evacuated it, German soldiers were in the Yelbeck area of British New Guinea, 50 miles north-west of Alexishafen, according to natives, a Sydney cablegram reports. This information was brought back by an Australian patrol which reconnoitred Yelbeck. It is thought that the Germans may have been officers stationed at German missions who came out in their true colours when the Japanese invaded New Guinea. In view of their long association with these missions, it is considered unlikely that the natives could have been mistaken in their identification of German soldiers. Yelbeck is now clear of Japanese, who left the mission church in partial ruin. -
