BOWLERS’ EVENING
WIND=UP SOCIAL AND DANCE GATHERING ON SATURDAY NIGHT. CONCLUSION OF SEASON. The wind-up of the bowling season was celebrated in Masterton on Saturday night for the third year in succession by holding a social and dinner, which proved even more successful than the previous ones, being about 100 guests, visitors from Palmerston North, Carterton and Greytown. The organisation was again in the capable hands of Mr H. B. Thomas, who had the assistance of an enthusiastic band of helpers. Mr W. Chapman proved an efficient chairman. Violin solos were rendered by Messrs S. Taylor and J. Gallagher, and Mr G. Macpherson gave several pipe selections. Mr Harry Hall was at his best in song and story, and a bracket of songs by Mr Ron. Gilbert was popular. The clever conjuring tricks of Mr Callingham, of Carterton, were of high merit, whilst episodes on various bowling greens were presented in a sketch by Messrs F. Price and H. Smith, the local bowling secretaries. The accompanist was Mr C. Kerry. The dinner which fololwed was of the usual high standard, and the following toast list was honoured (responses in parentheses):—“The Armed Services,” proposed by Mr W. C. M. Sorenseri (Sir Herbert Hart); “The Visitors, J. Russell (Mr Kells, Mr McLeod, Greytown, ghan, Carterton); “Our B. Thomas,” Mr H. M. Smith (Mr Thomas); “The Entertainers,” Mr C. DeLacey (Mr F. Price); “Wairarapa Bowling Centre,” Mr G. Hughan (Mr G. Hayne); “Bowling Colts,” Mr A. Stubbings (Mr A. Steele); “Helpers,” Mr F. Barr (Mr C. Abbott).
Mr Thomas paid tributes to all those, particularly the ladies, who had rendered splendid assistance, which was reflected in the artistic manner in which the tables had been prepared. The singing of “Auld Lang Syne” brought to a conclusion one of the most successful functions yet held.
