CATHOLIC CLUBS

GATHERING IN MASTERTON CONFERENCE AND COMPETITIONS _ LOCAL TEAM WINS SHIELD. The annual conference and competitions of thd Federated Catholic Clubs and Societies of New Zealand was held in Masterton at the weekend. Owing to the restrictions in travel a number of clubs who had intended competing in the various sections were unable to attend. The clubs represented were:— Catholic Students University Guild (2), St. Patrick’s College Old Boys, Wellington; Leonine Club, Wellington; Marist Bro's. School, Palmerston North; St. Bride’s Convent, Masterton; Masterton Catholic Club and Masterton Hibernian Society.

The competitions for the Frances Redwood Memorial Shield comprised: Prepared debate (subject, “The Problem of New Zealand's Population can be solved by a Vigorous Immigration Policy); oratory, elocution, religious questions, impromptu speech, billiards and tennis. The team securing the most points in the competitions was the Masterton Catholic Club, 13 points. Varsity Students Guild, Wellington, runners-up.

The Masterton Catholic Club won. the prepared debate and religious questions section, were second in the elocution and third, respectively, in the oratory and billiards. The members of the team were: Messrs W. C. Orange and J. Murphy (debate), Miss B Reilly (religious questions), Miss Norah Doyle (elocution and oratory), Mr J. Sutherland (billiards), and Mr W. Patete (tennis). Mr W. Orange was adjudged the best speaker in debate. The adjudicators were: Mr G. W. Morice, M.A., B.Sc.; Mr J. P. Farrell, Miss E. Thomas, A.T.C.L., L.T.C.L., and the Rev. Dr. Gascoinge, M.A. (Oxen.), Ph.D.

The tennis competitions had to be abandoned owing to the rain. The various sessions of the competitions were well attended and a very high standard was set by the various competitors. The conference of the North Island District executive was held in conjunction with the competitions. The election of officers for the ensuing year' resulted as follow: —President, Mr W. C. Orange; vice-president, Miss M. Diggins; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr J. F. McDonald (Masterton); committee, Messrs D. B. Curry, J. Sutherland, J. Curry, W. Brady (Masterton); Mrs J. Murphy and Mr D. O'Connor (Wellington), and Mr B. St. B. James (Hamilton), and Miss E. O’Donoghue (Hastings). Mr J. Connors, of Mastertcn, was elected a life member of the North Island executive.
