CARTERTON

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MEETING AT PARKVALE. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Parkvale Women’s Institute, Mrs D. N. Adams presided and extended a hearty welcome to visitors and members. Apologies for'absence were received from Mesdames W. Henry Booth, V. J. Ashton, E. Hughes and H. Parker. The Institute's birthday was celebrated and a splendid programme of vocal and other items was rendered by members and friends.

Visitors were present from Carterton, Matarawa, Dalefield and East Taratahi.

During the afternoon Miss O. W. Wolters, president of the Wairarapa Federation, presentea the points prizes won during the year. She was thanked and presented with a shoulder spray.’

Mesdames B. Booth and J. Booth judged the monthly competitions and each was presented with a shoulder spray.

The hostesses were Mesdames R. P. Williams, C. Jensen, S. Conwell and J. Rayner. The following were the results of the competitions:—Seniors: Flowers, large: Mrs R. Williams 1, Mrs E. Rose 2, Mrs M. Lukies 2. Flowers, large: Miss S. Rayner 1, Miss J. Lukies 2; small, Miss J. Lukies 1, Miss M. Lukies 2. ORDER OF ODD FELLOWS LOYAL HEART OF OAK LODGE. Sister M. E. Eagle, N.G., presided over the quarterly meeting of the Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge of Odd Fellows last evening. Members stood in silence for a few moments out of respect to the P.G. Bro. Athol R. Tankersley, who was killed in Italy. The secretary was instructed to forward letters of condolence to the widow and parents of Bro. Tankersley. F.D.G.M. Bro. C. J. DeLacey said Bro. Tankersley joined the lodge on June 15, 1936 and in the course of three years had passed through the various offices of the lodge. He was a valued member, a keen ritualist and a member who had carried out his duties in a conscientious manner. His death was keenly felt by members. It was resolved that his lodge activities be placed on record.

The balance sheet for the year 1943, audited and found correct, was adopted. The balance sheet showed credits to the various funds as follows:—Sick and Funeral Fund, £7,441 2s 4d; Management Fund, £B2 Os lOd; Distress Fund, £312 18s Id; Surplus Fund, £723 12s 2d; Social Fund, £25 18s 3d. Among the assets were £1620 8s 8d mortgage on freehold property, £5074 in Government Inscribed Stock, £350 in National Savings, £416 in the bank, and £lO9l 5s in the District Loan Fund, a total of £8,551 13s Bd. Bro. H. A. McPhee was appointed auditor for the ensuing year. Disappointment was expressed that the annual district conference had been postponed. Entertainment of Soldiers. The Carterton Citizens’ Entertainment Committee will tender a complimentary dance to soldiers on furlough from overseas. Udy’s Orchestra will provide the music. The supper has been entrusted to a capable ladies' committee and will be a feature of the gathering. During the evening the Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, will welcome the soldiers. Aircraftman Entertained. A very enjoyable time was spent at the residence of Mr and Mrs F. Sewell Senr., Carterton, on Saturday night when occasion was taken to entertain their son, Aircraftman Eric Sewell. Singing and dancing was indulged in. At supper a number of toasts were honoured, including “The guest of the evening,” as well as the healths of Francis Sewell (England), John Sewell (Italy), Mark Corbett, W. Bubb and the returned men of whom a number were present. Mr M. Clark, Masterton, proposed the toast of the guest of the evening, and on behalf of the family, Mr Athol Sewell asked him to accept a writing companion and shaving set in a leather case. The gifts were suitably acknowledged. The toast of the returned men was replied to by Pte. B. Hunt, Masterton. ■ The gathering was brought to a close by the singing of Auld Lang Syne. Guests were present from Pahiatua, Upper Hutt, Petone, Waikato and Masterton. Aircraftman Sewell was also entertained at a gathering at the “Grosenvar” Club in Wellington on Friday evening and presented with a wallet. Prior to his departure from Carterton Aircraftman Eric Sewell was met by the Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, and handed a cheque from the citizens of the borough of Carterton, accompanied by best wishes for his future. Harvest Festival The Salvation Army’s harvest festival thanksgiving meetings were concluded last evening. A musical programme was provided by Mi- J. Archer and members from Masterton. Major Thorne, manager of Whatman Home, was chairman and later disposed of produce in a capable manner. ' Sunday’s meetings were conducted by Captain Simpson, of Wellington.
