Nothing was left of the plane but debris. Lieutenant Hansen, a United States Marine fighter pilot, with a record of shooting down 25 Japanese planes in the South Pacific needed only one more victory, to equal Rickenbacker’s record of the first World War. He was also reported missing three months ago but later showed up.
