FLYING OFFICER RISHWORTH
DEATH ON ACTIVE SERVICE. IN THE PACIFIC AREA. The many friends of Mr and Mrs H. W. Rishworth, 38 Cornwall Street. Masterton, will learn with regret that official advice has been received of the death on active service of their only son, Flying Officer Peter S. Rishworth, R.N.Z.A.F. Flying Officer Rishworth, who was an exceedingly popular young man, was born in 1915, and received his early education in Masterton at Mr Triman’s Preparatory School and the Central School, and his secondary education at Nelson College, where he was a prefect. He was an accomplished sportsman, and excelled in tennis, badminton, cricket and golf. He was in the Wairarapa Primary Schools’ representative first fifteen, and represented Wairarapa in interprovincial badminton matches, and was an executive member of the Wairarapa Badminton Association. He also represented Wairarapa in the junior Savil Cup polo tournament. Flying Officer Rishworth managed his mother’s farm at “Omahu,” Bennett’s Hill, until the outbreak of war. He enlisted in the R.N.Z.A.F. in 1940, and joined tin in May, 1941. He was a pilot instructor until June, 1943, find was transferred to a fighter squadron operating in the Northern Solomons. Flying Officer Rishworth was drowned at sea on an early morning patrol at 7 o’clock on Monday, November 22, 1943, in the northern area. He was scheduled to have been on his way home on furlough on the following Monday morning. The sympathy of a wide circle of friends will be extended to the bereaved parents and relatives.
