Fruit Growers’ Views

While recognising that the new marketing scheme for this season’s pip t ri - u crop was a genuine endeavour by the Government and Stabilisation Commission to assist the industry, a meeting of Nelson area growers by resolution expressed the opinion that the scheme was unworkable and not acceptable to the industry. It was decided to ask the New Zealand Fruitgrowers’ Federation to resume negotiations with the Government in an endeavour to secure a price based on the average cost of production. In view of the decision that the scheme was not acceptable, the growers decided to take no action in nominating growers for selection by the Minister for Marketing as members of the Advisory Committee and Fruit Marketing Council. A meeting at Motueka of area growers also passed a motion declaring the scheme unworkable and unacceptable, and requested the federation directors to report to the Prime Minister on unfavourable aspects of the scheme, and to continue efforts to secure a guaranteed price. This meeting also favoured a tentative agreement with the Government's suggestion for further producer control in marketing.
