WAIRARAPA CENTRE TOURNEY MASTERTON RINK WINS FINAL. SPLENDID CONTEST WITNESSED. A Masterton rink skipped by W. Reid won the Wairarapa Bowling Centre’s New Year tournament. The final, which was played on the Masterton Club’s green yesterday afternoon, proved an exceptionally fine exhibition of bowling by both teams and was a fitting conclusion to a most successful and enjoyable tournament, i Included in a large gallery of onlookers, were a considerable number of visitors from the Lower Valley and ladies, whilst in the latter stages of the game a progressive threes tournament was suspended in order to allow the participants to witness the game. The position on practically every head altered with each successive bowl played, and the onlookers spontaneously showed their appreciation of the many splendid shots, which required accurate judgment on a keen green. Although in the early stages both teams scored a five, only a point or two separated the teams throughout, with Higginson maintaining the advantage until the 19th end, when the board read 19 all. The 11th end was very keenly contested, both skips “killing” the head, and again on the 18th end, Higginson, with a very accurate drive, “killed” a head in which he could have easily gone down by four or five points. On the 20th end Reid scored a single, and when the skips left the head on the last end Reid was two up. With successive drives Higginson narrowly missed taking out the shot bowls, and Reid was the winner, 22/19. Reid’s win was"a meritorious one, in that he had not suffered a defeat throughout the tournament. In presenting the trophies to the winners, Messrs W. Davies, W. Hendry, F. Mills and W. Reid (s), and to the runnersup, Messrs N. S. McLeod, J. Burden. F. Dennes and W. Higginson (s) (run-ners-up last year also), the Centre president, Mr G. Hayne, congratulated the players on their fine exhibition and called for cheers for both teams. Throughout the game the onlookers were acquainted of the scores by means of a large notice board. The morning and afternoon tea arrangements were again in the capable hands of Mrs G. Beecroft, whose untiring efforts were appreciated by all.
