MARSHALLS GROUP
MAY BE NEXT ON INVASION LIST ALLIED BOMBING ATTACKSNAURU ISLAND AMONG TARGETS (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) PEARL HARBOUR, December 5. Liberator bombers yesterday raided Mille atoll in the Marshalls group and Nauru Island. Admiral Nimitz, commander of the United States fleets in the Pacific,- reports that 50 tons of bombs were dropped on Mille atoll, starting several fires and destroyingone grounded medium bomber. No enemy fighter opposition was encountered. All the Liberators returned, but five were damaged by flak. Another group of Liberators set fire to an oil dump on Nauru Island. There was no enemy air opposition, but three Japanese planes departed from the area as the American planes arrived. All the bombers returned, one being slightly damaged by flak. The Pearl Harbour correspondent of the United Press of America says that the bombing of Mille is interpreted as an indication that this atoll, which is on the southern fringe of the Marshalls, would receive a heavy aerial pounding similar to that preceding the landings in the Gilberts and that the Marshalls might be next on the invasion list.
