Mrs P. J. Borthwick, “Eridge,” Lansdowne, is visiting Tauranga. Mrs A. Caselberg, Sussex Street, Masterton, is on a visit to Wellington. The following Masterton candidates were successful in'the State examination held in June for maternity nurses (the names are. not shown in order of merit): P. J. Barton, L. E. E. Cunningham, M. A. A. Mason, R. Shields and K. D. Yerex. The Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, has been advised by the Admiralty that the King has approved the award of a bar to the Distinguished Service Cross held by Temporary ’ Sub-Lieutenant George James Macdonald, R.N.Z.N.V.R. The advice of the award of the D.F.C. to Sub-Lieutenant Macdonald was published on April 21, 1942, the award being made for good service in attacks on an enemy convoy. Sub-Lieutenant Macdonald's father is Mr John W. Macdonald, Government Life Insurance Department, Wellington. Following publication on Monday of a report that two or more sons of six New Zealand families have received air awards overseas, news was received in Gisborne yesterday of a further addition to this notable record. The latest to join the list are Mr and Mrs E. A. Thompson, of Waipiro Bay, whose son, Flight Sergeant Forest Harold Thompson, has been awarded the D.F.M. for his work in many big raids over Germany and Italy as a member of a Stirling bomber crew. His brother, the late Flying Officer Onslow Thompson, had also been awarded the D.F.M. Of the seven New Zealand families with double air awards, three reside in the Gisborne district.
