NEXT SEASON’S FRUIT
PURCHASE BY GOVERNMENT APPROVED BY FEDERATION AS WAR MEASURE. CRITICISM OF FERTILISER RESTRICTIONS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The annual conference of the Fruitgrowers’ Federation approved the principle of the purchase of pip fruit by the Government through the Internal Marketing Department as a war measure. The basis to be asked for next season’s fruit crop purchase is the 1937 cost of production figure, plus assessed costs since that date. Concern was expressed at the restriction of fertilisers for orchards to lijcwt. an acre. It was stated that fruit was in a very disadvantageous position compared with other crops, such as hops and tobacco. Market gardeners could get all the fertilisers they needed for vegetable growing. It would have been more equitable if the fruitgrowers had been given an allowance on the basis of the average quantities used over a period of years.
