Misses Robina and Diana Thompson, Upper Plain, have returned from a visit to the South Island. Mrs R. C. Drummond, Masterton, is staying with her daughter, Mrs R. G. Phillips-Turner, Hamilton. Miss Mary James, of the training staff of the Palmerston Hospital, is spending a week in Masterton. The death has occurred at Mangatainoka of a well known resident m the person of Mr David Brabner, at the age of 74 years. Mrs H. O. Bunny, Chapel Street, Masterton, Mrs R. A. Bunny, Street, Mastertom', and Miss Kirsty Cameron, Cole Street, Masterton, are visiting Chateau Tongariro. Private H, Knox ,of Masterton, is reported missing. At the time when he enlisted he was in the employ or the Masterton County Council, being roadman at Brancepeth. His next-of-kin is an aunt in Southport, England. Under the will of Sir James Allen, Dunedin, whose estate has been sworn at £45,000, bequests made are: £5OO to All Saints’ Church, £2OO to the Salvation Army, £5OO to the Otago University and £2OO to the New Zealand Nurses’ Memorial Fund. Mr and Mrs L. Welch, Mt. Bruce, Masterton, have received a postcard from their son Colin, who was taken prisoner at Sidi Rezegh in November last. He arrived at a camp in Italy on March 7, 1942, and is very fit and in good quarters. He extends greetings to friends and relations in New Zealand. The head office of the Union Steam Ship Company, of New Zealand, Ltd., announces that Captain W. Martin, late of the Awatea, has decided to retire from the sea for private reasons. Captain Martin was born in Liverpool, in 1881, and as a youth commenced his four years’ apprenticeship at sea in the sailing ship Marechai Sucnct. He joined the Union Company s, service in 1909 and was appointed to his first command in 1917. Seven years later he was transferred to the company’s passenger vessels and took command of the Manuka, later having charge of the Moeraki, Maheno, Maunganui, Marama, Tahiti and Makuia. Captain Martin was appointed to command the Awatea, in July, 1940, and relinquished charge of that vessel m March last to come ashore on holiday, since when he has decided to go m o retirement in Sydney.
