A special German communique says: “During the fighting at Sebastopol, from June 7 to July 4, we took 97,000 prisoners, including General Novikov, the Deputy Army Commander. Enemy casualties are estimated at 30,000 to 40,000 and the German losses were 872 officers and 23,239 men. Russian planes to the number of 141 were destroyed, while 31 of our aircraft are missing. We sank four destroyers, one submarine, three speed-boats, six coastal craft and four merchantmen. During the period of the Crimean operations, since September 21 last, and ending with the storming of Sebastopol, we took prisoner 430,000 men and captured 1,198 tanks and 2,102 guns.”
