OIL PROSPECTS
PROMISING IN THE KUMARA DISTRICT STATEMENT BY MINISTER OF MINES. DRILLING THERE & IN MANAWATU (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. There were a number of localities in the Kumara district that looked very promising after the . geophysical survey, said the Minister of Mines (Mr Webb) this morning, commenting on the preparations that are being made for drilling in that area. Mr Webb said that the New Zealand Minister in Washington (Mr Nash) had rendered great assistance in making arrangements with the American Government for priority in the shipment of men and their gear to the Dominion. The Superior Oil Company had had a team of about forty. experts engaged in survey work, with some of the most modern plant in the world, and after three years of prospecting at very great expense, the records of the work were sent to America for further checking. As a result, the. company had decided to send out to New Zealand three drilling rigs of most modern type. In -fact the drill that was about to operate on the West Coast was considered to be the largest ever exported. Drilling would be carried out with the bthe'r two rigs in the Manawatu district. ■ , ■ -
