UNITED NATIONS DAY
GREAT MILITARY PARADE IN WELLINGTON LONG MARCHING PROCESSION. AIRCRAFT AND MECHANISED WEAPONS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. United Nations Day was celebrated in Wellington by the biggest military display ever seen in tht city. The event was favoured by glorious weather. The,.,, parade through the city began at Thorndon, the GovernorGeneral (Sir Cyril Newall) taking the salute near the Citizens’ War Memorial. The first section consisted of marching troops, Air Force and Naval detachment's, and a representative group from the Merchant Navy, who included Lascars in native dress. A number of bands were distributed through the long column. Following came an impressive procession of mechanised weapons and transport, including artillery, tanks and Bren carriers, the whole extending for approximately 20 miles. The organisation of this great movement required the closing of the Hutt Road and other highways to ordinary traffic for several hours. Flights of bombers and fighters flew several times over the city. The event caused an almost complete cessation of business. An enormous crowd thronged the route through the city, but all had -an excellent view because of its extent.
