Donations of Chairs.
The military authorities wish to express their appreciation and thanks to the donors of chairs in response to the recent appeal . More chairs are still required and any further donations would be greatly appreciated. No Warrant of Fitness. On a charge of having no warrant of fitness in respect to his car, James Miller was fined 10s with costs, by Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., in the Masterton Magistrate’s Court this morning. The Borough Traffic Inspector, Mr J. McGregor, prosecuted. Women in the Army. An immediate start is to be made by the Army authorities in New Zealand with the selection of women for employment in certain artillery units, it is reported. The first can be expected to begin training shortly. The scheme has been adopted as the result of experience in Great Britain, where women soldiers have not only performed a number of auxiliary duties but have been sent into gun positions and have shot down enemy aircraft. Their first casualty was. recorded recently, and British officers have spoken in the highest terms of their devotion to duty and efficiency. In some cases the employment of women will necessitate the provision of special quarters. In i others their duties will enable them Ito live at home.
