MEETINGS OF HOUSEHOLDERS

Biennial Elections Held Last Night

Meetings of householders were held throughout the Wairarapa last night to elect school committees for the ensuing two years. In the case of all the main Masterton schools no elections were necessary, as only the required number of nominations were received. In many other district schools committees were likewise elected unopposed. The attendances of householders in most cases were not large.

CENTRAL THREE RETIRING MEMBERS. APPRECIATION OF SERVICES. There was an attendance of thirty householders at the Central School last night when a very pleasant meeting was held. A letter from Messrs Moody and Macdonald suggesting that a motion be passed demanding that the Wellington Education Board take certain action with regard to the Navy League was received and no action taken. Special motions of thanks were passed to Messrs J. E. MeV. Calwell, C. Braggins and J. H. Cole, retiring members of the committee, for their fine services, special mention being made of the 22 years of service of Mr Calwell and the 20 years’ service of Mr Braggins. At the statutory meeting of the new committee held after the householders’ meeting, Mr W. R. Nicol was elected chairman and Mr E. G. Coddington hon. secretary and treasurer for the ensuing two year period. The members of the committee are: Messrs W. R. Nicol, A. V. Dixon, P. H. Shaw, A. I. Gibbs, G. Masters, A. E. Nelson, G. Bilderbeck, T. A. Russell, W. L. Butler.

WEST SCHOOL DENTAL CLINIC. RETIRING MEMBERS’ SERVICES APPRECIATED. There was a fair attendance of householders at West School. Mr E. R. Rogers presided. In stating that he was resigning from the committee, Mr Rogers said he was not severing his connection with the school. He expressed his thanks to the members of the committee, especially those of the outgoing committee for their assistance. Mr Rogers made special reference to the work of Messrs F. Shearei' and E. Tooby, two retiring members, and to the services of the secretary, Mr R. S. Graham, the treasurer, Mr Haybittie, and thanked the headmaster, Mr Farrell and his staff for their co-operation.

Several of those present expressed their appreciation of Mr Rogers’s services during his nine years of office. Mr Rogers, in response, said the new committee should prove an excellent one.

The biennial report stated that although a grant of £1260 had been made by Cabinet to concrete the school grounds the embargo on the use of cement had prevented the work from being carried out. It was hoped to have temporary improvements effected meantime. A dental clinic would soon be established at the school. West School parents had donated £36 8s 2d and the school committee £2O. Appreciation was expressed of the work in that connection of Messrs Haybittie and R. S. Graham. The Home and School Association had proved a very live body and was doing excellent work. Thanks were expressed to Mr J. Renner for his help in many ways. The new committee is: Messrs H. P. Dugdale, H. G. Scott, W. J. Campbell, R. S. Graham, W. C. Batty, S. C. Haybittle, A. S. Graham, T. L. Wright, W. a i rd Mr R. S. Graham was elected chairman, Mr Dugdale secretary, and Mr Haybittie treasurer. Meetings would be held on the third Wednesday of every month.

LANSDOWNE RETIRING CHAIRMAN’S REVIEW. IMPROVEMENTS EFFECTED. Mr J G. McFarlane presided over a fair attendance of householders at Lansdowne. In a review of the past two years work, the retiring chairman, Mr McFarlane referred to the efforts made to place the Dental Clinic on a sound footing and to steps taken to establish a clinic on the school grounds. The detached class room had been raised and altered Tenders had been called for new latrines. Improvements had been effected to the school grounds. The proposed use of the school as an emergency hospital was still of considerable concern and the Education Department was negotiating for alternative accommodation. Mr McFarlane expressed his appreciation of the loyal support given him by members of the committee, by the headmaster, Mr J. W. T. Jones and his staff, and by the parents and pupils of the Lansdowne area. Every appeal had met with a generous response. He also eulogised the work of the caretaker, Mr J. Dwyer. On the motion of Mr Donovan a vote of thanks was passed to the ladies of the Home and School Association for their untiring work in raising funds for the school. A letter from the Navy League was received. The headmaster, on behalf of the staff and himself, placed on record his deep appreciation of the untiring efforts of Mr McFarlane in connection with the school and pupils 'during his term of office both as secretary and as chairman.

The new committee is: Messrs R. E. Baker, J. G. Dagg, J. R. Donovan, A. V. Faulknor, C. H. Jarvis, C. K. Long. J. G. Mac Kay, J. McGregor, E. H? Peters. Mr Faulknor was elected chairman, Mr Jarvis secretary and Mr Long treasurer.

It was decided that the monthly meetings be held on the second Thursday of every month, at 7 p.m. At the conclusion of the meeting an informal gathering was held at the home of Mr Faulknor to farewell Mr McFarlane. On behalf of the committee Mr Faulknor presented him with a smoker’s stand as a mark of appreciation of his untiring efforts on behalf of the school. ■

To the retiring member of the committee, Mr S. Munn, the committee expressed appreciation and thanks for his sixteen years of service in the interests of the school.

Several members spoke in high praise of the valuable service rendered to the school by the past head master, Mr O. Berry, and wished him further success in his new post at Randwick School.

CARTERTON NOT POSSIBLE TO REOPEN SOUTH SCHOOL. EXPENSE ENTAILED TOO GREAT. (“Times-Age” Special.) A small attendance of householders at Carterton was presided over by Mr H. J. McKenzie. A motion of sympathy and condolence was passed to parents who had suffered war bereavements.

In, reply to Mr Hatfield, who asked if it would not be possible for the south school to be re-opened for the teaching of infant scholars and thus save the. children a long walk to the Holloway Street school was answered by the chairman and headmaster, who stated that 'it was not possible, as only 16 pupils were concerned. That would entail too much expense. As the nominations did not exceed the number required for the incoming committee, the following were declared elected: Messrs G. L. Chatwin, P. L. Beere, F. Denbee, C. K. Goodin, W. E. Knowles, H. J. McKenzie, H. O. Peters, G. Stark and R. P. Williams. No action was taken regarding a circular in respect to Navy League activities in schools. A vote of thanks was carried by acclamation. to Messrs J. Finn, G. Rabbitts and B. E. Clark for their activities on the outgoing committee. The headmaster and his staff were thanked for their good work. At a subsequent meeting of the new committee, Mr H. J. McKenzie was reappointed chairman. Mr W. E. .Knowles was appointed secretary and Mr P. L. Beere treasurer; Messrs McKenzie, Denbee and Williams, calf club delegates, and Messrs W. Martin, Knowles, McKenzie, Beere and Chatwin, Dental Clinic representatives. It was decided that the committee meet on the first Monday in every month.

GREYTOWN NO ELECTION NECESSARY. ONE NOMINATION NOT IN ORDER. (“Times-Age” Special.) There were twenty householders present at the Greytown District High School. Mr H. G. Carter presided. The committee’s report stated, that during the past two years the affairs of the school had been well conducted. Improvements to the playing area had been completed. The distribution of milk and apples had proved popular. The agricultural clubs had made steady progress and the entries last year constituted a record. The headmaster, Mr S. C. Shedden. reported that despite the war the changes in staff were very small. Two teachers, Messrs A. L. Anker and A. Lane, were on active service. The agricultural side of the school life was very active and increased production had been the aim of both the ’secondary and primary pupils. The sum of £66 had been made from the sale of the root crops. This had been invested in National Bonds.

As the nomination of the Rev. Preston was not in order the retiring committee was declared elected. Votes of thanks were accorded the committee and staff for their services also the Press.

A circular in reference to the Navy League was received. At a meeting of the committee held later Mr H. G. Carter was re-elected chairman for the 15th time. Mr Dennes was re-elected treasurer and Mrs W. J. Knell secretary.
