Most of the news comes from Berlin or countries under German control. The attack from East Prussia was made without artillery preparation in order to surprise the Russians. It began two hours before the German Ambassador gave any information to M. Molotov. German planes are reported to have destroyed a considerable number of Russian aircraft on the ground. At the southern end of the front, very strong resistance is reported by Russian troops, according to the Rome radio.
The Japanese Cabinet has met to consider the new situation. No details of the meeting have been received. Mr Matsuoka, the Japanese Foreign Minister, called on the Prime Minister, Prince Konoye. A message from Washington states that the British Ambassador, Lord Halifax, conferred with Mr Sumner Welles, Assistant Secretary of State. The.conversation lasted for two hours.
