BRITAIN’S ONE AIM

Declared by Mr Churchill DESTRUCTION OF THE NAZI GANG ALL POSSIBLE HELP PROMISED TO RUSSIA LONDON, June 22. The British Government’s judgment on the German attack on Russia was given this evening by the Prime Minister, Mr Churchill, who said Britain had but one aim. She was resolved to destroy Hitler and every vestige of the Nazi regime. From this course, nothing would turn her. She would never parley and never negotiate with Hitler or any of his gang. Any man or State who fought against Hitler, said Mr Churchill, would have Britain’s aid and any man or State who marched with Hitler would be Britain’s foe. That was Britain’s policy and that was her declaration. She would give whatever help that she could to Russia and the Russian people. The British Government, he said, had offered to the Government of the Soviet Union any technical or economic assistance that was within its power. The bombing of Germany, by day as well as by night, would proceed in ever-increasing measure, said Mr Churchill, who stated that the achievements of the R.A.F. over France were only a beginning. In another six months the help being received from the United States in war materials of all kinds, and especially in heavy bombers, would begin to tell. Mr Churchill said the present war was no class war. Hitler’s attack on Russia would not cause any slowing down of Britain’s efforts. It was no more than a prelude to an attempted invasion of the British Isles. Hitler no doubt hoped to be able to account for Russia before the winter and then hurl his forces at Britain, before United States assistance made itself felt. Russia’s danger was Britain’s danger and the danger of the United States. “Let us,” said Mr Churchill, “redouble our exertions and strike with united strength while life and power remain.”
