DOG TRIALS

MASTERTON CLUB CONCLUDING EVENTS. WINNERS OF TROPHIES. The Masterton Collie Club's annual dog trials were concluded at Mr George Shaw’s property, Te Ore Ore, yesterday afternoon. The weather showed a considerable improvement on the previous days. The standard in all events was high. The entries showed an increase on those of last year and the trials proved most successful. The secretary, Mr C. J. Macdonald, and a large and capable committee worked hard for the success of the gathering. The president, Mr J. M. James, thanked the judge, Mr J. Borlase, Nelson, for the capable manner in which he had carried out his duties. He also thanked the ladies’ committee for the? splendid work they had done in supplying hot meals at all hours of the day.

The president’s cup (donated by Mr J. M. James) for the long head event was won by Mr M. J. Wilton. Mr Wilton, who was successful in 1936, 1938 and 1941, has won the cup outright. Mr B. Vallance won the T. A. Jennings cup for the maiden long head event, for local competitors only. He won the cup in 1933 and 1940, and with his win in the current trials has also won the cup outright. Mr C.'J. Macdonald's rose bowl for the short head and yard was won by Mr M. J. Wilton. The L. S. Nicol cup for the maiden short head and yard was won byMr B. Vallance. The patron's cup, donated by Mr George Shaw, was won outright by Mr Gordon Thomson. Mr Thomson has won the huntaway event for two successive years. Mr C. Mackay won the Laing Memorial Challenge Cup for the maiden huntaway event. Mr Gordon Thomson won outright a cup he presented in 1933 for the best team of two dogs in the long head and huntaway events. Other trophy winners wore: —Special prize of £2 2s, presented by Mr W. F. McLaren for the local lady nominating the dog scoring most points in the short head and yard event. Miss McLaren. Liverton trophy, for dog under best command in the long head event, Mr M. J. Wilton. Trophy for competitor and dog who have not won an open event, scoring most points in the long head event, Mr A. Chorley. J. M. James trophy, with the same conditions as above in the short head and yard event. Mr B. Vallance. Messrs Thomsen and J. McGuinness's prize foi maiden competitor working his dog in the most workman-like manner in the maiden huntaway event. Mr C. Mackay. Concluding results arc: — Huntaway: G. Thomson's Bruce. 43 points, 1; S. F. Herbert's Boy, 42 points 2; H. Herbert's Toss. 38 points. 3: M. Farrell's Ben, 37 points. 4: lan Hay's Toby. 361 points. 5.

Maiden huntaway: C. Mackay's Mac, 34 points, 1: E. G. Corlett’s Pam. 33 points, 2; W. Baine's Fly. 32 points. 3; S. F. Smith's Roy,'3l points. 4. The maiden long head event was won by Mr B. Vallancc’s Speed, with 361 points.
