CARTERTON

WAR SERVICE WOMEN'S AUXILIARY. (“Times-Age” Special.) There was a good attendance of women and girls at the meeting of the Women’s War Service Auxiliary held last evening, when those present took the opportunity of filling in registration cards. A number joined up with the cycling corps, which will be conducted under the leadership of Miss C. Berrill. Several members decided to take advantage of the Plunket Aid lectures, which will commence on Friday. June 27. A committee member will be in attendance at the Borough Council room on Wednesdays and Fridays from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., so that registration cards can be filled in. All women and girls should register as soon as possible, as it is desired to obtain the fullest measure of information regarding the women power in Carterton and I district. Card Tournament. There was a good attendance at the fortnightly "500” tournament held in the Bandroom under the auspices of the Home and School Association. Prizes were won as follows: —Ladies: Mrs Jackson Junr.. 1; Mrs K. Hodder, 2. Men: Mr Edwards, 1; Mr F. Jackson, Women’s Division. A card party was held in the Bandroom by the Women's Division of the Farmers’ Union in aid of the funds for the purpose of providing garments for members of the Mercantile Marine. The party was a success, the sum. of £8 being taken. Mrs H. Hodder and the committee expressed themselves as pleased with the result. The ladies are now busy knitting jerseys, caps and seaboot stockings. It is hoped before long to be able to forward a substantial parcel of woollen garments to the men. A parcel is to be sent to a soldier who lost all his belongings in the evacuation from Greece. A party is being arranged for the purpose of obtaining funds to purchase wool from '•.which to knit comforts for soldiers who fought in Greece and Crete. Last winter the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union forwarded to the Navy 6 pullovers, 47 caps, 5 polo jerseys, 9 pairs of sox, and 11 pairs of mittens.

Gun Club. Wairarapa Gun Club members will hold competitions on their grounds, Norfolk Road, at the weekend. Personal Items. Mrs Wright, of Clareville, has received word i’ronj her son, Pte. P. Wright, stating he is in good health. His letter was written after the evacuation of Greece. Mr R. W. Nunn, Carterton, has entered the Masterton Hospital for treatment.
