AUSTRALIAN RACING
EVENTS AT FLEMINGTON CAULFIELD CUP WON BY BEAULIVRE. GLADYNEV FILLS SECOND PLACE. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE, October 20. The weather was fine and the attendance excellent for the third day of the V.A.T.C. at Flemington. The totalisator handled £96,680, a decrease of £7291 compared with last year, when there were eight events. Saturday’s Cup total was £25,816, an all-time record. Though drawn badly at the barrier, Session began smartly, and led over the last seven furlongs in the Burwood Handicap. He stalled off Cephren to win narrowly, with Darkfelt a fair third. Throttle directed attention to her Oaks chances by a fast-finishing fourth. Harith, racing in the same interests as Maikai, led throughout in the Gwyn Nursery, to beat the fast-finishing Portfolio. Pyramus was a good third, - with Portable a close fourth. The winner cost 240 guineas as a yearling. Whisper Low, who was regarded as a certainty, just defeated Coochbehar in the Mona Nursery. Airsong was a moderate third. The winner is trained by J. Jamieson, and finished second in the Gimcrack Stakes to All Love. Beaulivre showed that his Randwick form was wrong by a brilliant win in the Caulfield Cup, Gladynev finished strongly, and would have won in another few strides. Historian was a good third. High Caste lost a little ground at the turn, when well placed. He came again to secure a good fourth. The race was a triumph for New Zealand, as Beaulivre’s trainer, the formed New Zealander, G. Price, scored his first Caulfield Cup success. The rider, A. Dewhurst, secured the mount the day before the race. Some hoots followed Beaulivre’s win, but they were soon drowned in the applause. True Flight gave a disappointing display, being one of the last to finish. Maikai was never dangerous, and Reading tired. Macrob was fifth, and improved oh recent form by running on well. The last half-mile was covered in 484 seconds. Reading received a severe kick before the start, and the flesh was cut almost to the bone on the near hind leg. Beaulivre is liable to a re-handicap up to' 101 b for the Melbourne Cup. His | rider, Dewhurst, is of opinion that the horse will run out the extra distance. The fancied Parentena gained the honours in the Wyuna Steeplechase. The New Zealand-bred Whernside may have won but for hanging in the last furlong. The veteran Seymour was a good third. Gold Salute gave an amazing performance in the Windsor Handicap. He lost ground at the start and was a bad last half-way, but finished brilliantly in second place. Aurie’s Star led all the way.
