A GREAT RECEPTION
MAJOR-GENERAL FREYBERG. WHOLEHEARTED WELCOME AT CHRISTCHURCH. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) ' CHRISTCHURCH. This Day. Not since royalty was last received in Christchurch has the city been more wholehearted in its welcome to a visitor than today when Major-General Freyberg, commanding the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force, arrived for a stay of one day. From the cheering of the artillerymen at the heads as the Rangatira steamed up the harbour, the welcome on the wharf at Lyttelton, the. civic reception in Cathedral Square and the enthusiasm of the troops at Burnham, it was a triumphal progress, emphasising the universal approval of the choice of the great soldier who is to lead the New Zealand troops overseas. When Major-General Freyberg stepped on the balcony with the Mayor (Mr MacFarlane) there was a burst of cheering but it was nothing to the full-throated roar of more than three thousand throats when the speeches were over. As he came out to his car the crowd surged forward and he passed through a narrow lane to his car, driving off to another burst of cheering.
