HEAVY FIGHTING
POLES ADMIT RETREAT IN SILESIA IN FACE OF SUPERIOR FORCES. WIDESPREAD AIR BOMBING. (Received This Day, 11.15 a.m.) WARSAW, September 4. Twenty-seven German planes bombed Bydgoszcz, inflicting heavy civilian losses. Bombs were dropped on trains, killing'and wounding many passengers. A communique states that . Polish cavalry recaptured Leszno and Rawicz, on the Western frontier, pursuing the enemy. Slight gains were made on the East Prussian front, but the loss of Czestochowa on Sunday is admitted. Close to that place, it is stated, the Poles previously destroyed two enemy armoured columns. Twenty-seven enemy planes were brought down today. Our losses were eleven. Strong attacks are continuing on the Silesian front and in the Tatra Mountains. In face of heavily superior forces, with armoured units, artillery and air support, we are retreating in Silesia.
