FORLORN HOPE STAND BY POLES POST OFFICE DEFENDED. RESISTANCE OVERCOME • BY FIRE. NEW YORK, September. 4. The Danzig correspondent of the United Press of America, in his first dispatch since the city’s annexation, describes how flame finally broke the resistance of 70 Poles armed with machine-guns who held the Post Office in the centre of the city. After vainly assaulting it the Germans brought up light artillery and blew away the front of the building and then poured water with petrol on top of it into the building and set it on fire. The correspondent adds that the chatter of machine-guns at every offensive indicates that some of the defenders of the Westerplatte ammunition dump are still alive. Planes dropped 60 bombs into the fort yesterday while shelling from the sea continues. The populace was ordered out of the surrounding territory today apparently in preparation for a smothering bombardment. DELIBERATE ACT BOMBING OF AMBASSADOR'S VILLA. REPORT TO WASHINGTON. NEW YORK, September 4. The Warsaw correspondent of the Associated Press of America says that the United States Ambassador, Mr Biddle, has advised Washington that he believes the . bombing of his villa was deliberate.
