After waiting for over a week for a favourable opportunity to take soundings f > ascertain the depths of water on the seaward side of the stranded steamer Port Bowen, the Wanganui Harbour Board's pilot launch was able io sfari today. The Harbourmaster.
Captain F. G. Taylor and the Marino Superintendent for the Port Lane of Sydney. Captain D. W. Gibson, will take the soundings. Mushroom anchors and cables will be attached to the Port. Bowen. Operations on the beach consist of transferring gear from the shore to the stranded steamer. The heavier gear will be taken to the Port Bowen by lighters. A contract has been let for lorries to transfer cargo from the Port Bowen to cold stores. The matter of building a platform from the vessel to the shore to facilitate unloading is under consideration. Probably this course will be adopted, being a more expeditious method of transferring the cargo to the lorries.
