TRANSPORT LICENSING
SITTING OF NO. 2 AUTHORITY IN MASTERTON RENEWALS OF GOODS SERVICE LICENCES. BIG BATCH DEALT WITH. A big batch of applications for renewal of goods service licences, besides other applications, is being dealt with by the No. 2 Transport Licensing Authority. Mr J; P. A. Skoglund, at a sitting in Masterton today. P. J. Pope applied for a new goods service licence in respect to the Featherston County and for special trips between Greytown and Mastertcn to carry out a contract for the cartage and distribution of benzine in bulk and general merchandise from Messrs Wright Stephenson and Co’s. Masterton store. Mr Ramsay, manager of Messrs Wright Stephenson and Co., appeared in support of the application, stating that such an arrangement would be far more satisfactory to his firm that any other. The application was strongly opposed by the Transport Federation on the ground that a service was already in operation which could be used. The existing service had not had an opportunity of doing this work. Mr Skoglund said he had advised carriers’ associations elsewhere to give a service to firms so as to meet their wishes and it should be possible for such associations to provide those services. He reserved his decision on the understanding . that Messrs Wright Stephenson and Co. approached local carriers to see if they could carry on a service to the firm's satisfaction. Renewals of goods service licences were granted to the following:—J. L. Leggatt (Carterton). D. C. and A. Stuart. E. T. Waters, W. Dickason and Son. B. Sewell (Carterton), L. M. Archer, B. N. Harding, V. E. Oliver, O. S. Shute, W. Harding, F. B. Gra v , K. J. Aplin, T. L. L. Pearson, R. P. “Maxled, W. R, Welch, Fly and Young, Ltd., M. M. Condon, T. Thomson, J. B. MacLean, J. Kelly, F. E. Allen, A. P. Ralph (Mangamaire), J. W. McLauchlan. Featherston operators: W. G. Lynskey, R. Charles and Son, J. W. Hyland, M. B. Tait, Elder and Son.- H. M. Cherry, L. G. Rasmussen, A. Hodder. Mauriceville: A. E. Clarke, Clarke Bros., C. Roigard. Greytown operators: H. B. Bull,- A. H. L. Bull, F. Dennes. Carterton operators: H. Swain, A. Archer, W. A. R. Pinfold, R. F. Taucher. Martinborough operators: A. C. Casely, R. P. and A. H. George, W. O. Hewetson, N. H. Ramsden, H. H. Kelly and F. Dillon. R. J. Nilsson (Eketahuna), M. M. Reid (Hinakura), H. W. Schofield (Tinui), J. C. Matson (Gladstone), Thos. Borthwick and Sons, Ltd. (for 12 months only), W. Allen and J. R. Donovan.
Objections were raised by Clarke Bros, to the renewal of a conditional licence to J. W. Milner (Mauriceville). After hearing the parties, Mr Skoglund said he saw no reason why the licence should not be renewed in its present form, but he warned Mr Milner that he had to adhere to the terms of his licence. If there were any breach of those terms, Mr Skoglund said he would have to take steps either to cancel the second vehicle authority or some other means to discipline him. Milner’s ordinary goods service licence was also renewed. Jenkins's Motor Services were granted a renewal of a passenger licence in respect to the Masterton-Martin-borough service, on condition that the company issue tickets for through passengers.
The transfer of a goods service licence was granted from J. W. Thornton to J. W. and L. R. Thornton.
The transfer of a goods service licence from Hadley Bros, to R. F. Taucher, Carterton, was refused. A renewal of a goods service licence was granted to O. R. Fairbrother. E. H. Spackman’s goods service licence was renewed in its present form. Amendments were allowed in respect to renewals of the following goods service licences: J. W. Thornton (one of three vehicle authorities extended to cover seven counties); W. Kilminster (addition of Pahiatua County); Grantham and Grantham (to enable road work to be carried out in Mauriceville and Castlepoint counties); R. N. Nunn, Gladstone (area extended to include Pongaroa and Castlepoint for stock only); W. Chapman and Sons (seasonal licence extended for the carriage of general goods). Mr Skoglund refused an amendment sought by W. Kilmister for the carriage of fat and store stock to Wellington. He pointed out that the Railways Department held a licence between Masterton and Wellington and under section 15 of the regulations the consent of the Minister of Railways had to be obtained before a licence could "be granted for this purpose and there did not appear to be any likelihood of the Minister agreeing to such a licence. If any carriers wished to secure the same privileges as were given in the Manawatu and Hawke’s Bay areas in regard to the carriage of store stock within a radius of 50 miles from saleyards he advised them to make application.
Applications for amendments by R. S. Tyacke, J. W. Thornton Senr., J. W. Thornton Junr., and Garrity, Bros, were refused.
