HOCKEY NOTES. GAME ON UP-GRADE. Two games were played locally on Saturday, the Scout team meeting Carterton A, and the Club team College A. Both visiting teams play excellent hockey and are probably the two best teams in the competition. It was, therefore, no disgrace for the local boys to be beaten 6-2 and 3-nil respectively. The scores are a vast improvement upon those recorded last year and area definite indication that the work of the past two years is now bearing fruit. Both teams are playing a sound orthodox game which will stand them in good stead as time goes on. Judging by half-time scores it would seem that they do not as yet possess the stamina of their opponents; but the latter are, taken all round, much bigger boys and have weight, hqight, speed and reach all in their favour. From the Masterton teams of boys a splendidly balanced senior team could be selected which in stickwork, tactics and stamina would put any of the senior teams to the test. The Scout team has earned a reputation extending far beyond Greytown for their tenacity. Although many of the boys .are small, they are well led' by L. Brabender, and they all display remarkable temperament and persistency. Coaches of outside teams never fail to express appreciation of the manner of these lads on the field. It is that characteristic which will put them in the top flight of hockey players in good time. A splendid battle-royal is' in store when the Scout and Club teams meet, with the odds at present in favour of the Scouts. The Club team, however, is • displaying much more cohesion, and only requires closer attention to positional play to obtain really good results. One of the most gratifying characteristics this year is the club spirit. The boys have lost no time in exhibiting a good sense Of responsibility, and are raising funds in a way that would put many older players to shame, and with an object that is surprising: namely a co-operative effort to pay for bus fares and competition entry fees, so as to take the load off the subscriptions.

It is quite safe to say that hockey in Greytown is achieving a standard reminiscent of the days when the Kia Toa ladies’ team was one of the best in New Zealand. Members of the public are cordially invited to support a game that is catering for 25 to 30 of our local youths each Saturday by going along to watch the games.

Four teams have been entered for the 5-aside at Masterton on June 5. The teams chosen will be published on Wednesday if possible, and as many as can come will be required to attend practice on Thursday.
