BADMINTON

PROVINCIAL TOURNEY WON BY WELLINGTON. WAIRARAPA WIN THREE MATCHES. The Inter-Provincial Badminton Tournament held at Palmerston North over the weekend, was brought to a close with 41 games unplayed, the Wellington team having established such a strong position, that the games to be played could not affect the result. Wairarapa did exceptionally well, beating Manawatu, Wanganui, and'Taranaki. Messrs W. O. Whyte, Wellington, and J. J. Smith, New Plymouth, two of the New Zealand selectors for the Australian tour were present. P. Hawksworth established his place in the Australian tour as an absolute certainty by defeating C. Sheerin (who beat Roussell the top Wellington man) in two straight sets. Mrs Hawksworth also played well. The results of the Wairarapa v. Manawatu game were as follow (Wairarapa players being mentioned first in each instance): — ■

Men’s singles: P. Hawksworth beat C. Sheerin, 15/7, 15/8; J. J. Payton beat Jensen, 15/8, 15/8; J. Lulham lost to Christmas, 12/15, 1/15; J. Dwane lost to Barnett, 4/15, 4/15; H. M. O’Connor beat Rotheray, 15/12, 15/12; A. Stubbings lost to Marginson, 1/15, 15/10, 5/15.

Women’s singles: Mrs D. Young beat Miss Angove, 11/1, 11/6; Miss L. Hosking lost to Miss Crist, 7/11, 11/8, 9/12; Miss Rishworth beat Mrs New, 11/6, 9/11, 11/0; Miss D. Allen beat Miss Ross, 11/6, 11/0; Mrs Hawksworth lost to Miss Rodden by default;. Miss B. Payton beat Miss McDonald, 11/14, 11/5, 11/7. Men’s doubles: Hawksworth and Payton beat Sheerin and Jensen, 15/9, 15/11; Dwane and O’Connor beat Barnett and Rotheray, 18/17, 15/11. Women’s doubles: Misses Hosking and Rishworth beat Misses. Angove and Crist, 11/6, 14/9; Mrs Hawksworth and Miss Allen beat Misses Rodden and McDonald, 11/8, 11/12, 12/9.

Combined doubles: Hawksworth and Mrs Hawksworth beat Sheerin and Miss McDonald, 15/4, 15/0; O’Connor and Miss Rishworth lost to Barnett and Miss Crist, 12/15, 6/15; Dwane and Miss Hosking beat Rotheray and Miss Angove, 15/2, 15/7; J. J. Payton and Miss B. Payton beat Jensen and Miss Rodden, 15/13, 18/16; Lulham and Mrs D. Young beat Christmas and Miss New, 7/15, 15/7, 15/7; Stubbings and Miss Allen beat Marginson and Miss Ross, 15/9, 15/19, 15/6. Wairarapa won by 15 matches to 4. ST. MATTHEW’S B TEAM.
