GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY
UNIQUE BOWLING EVENT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, September 7. An event perhaps unique in the bowling world of New Zealand took place in the Dunedin Bowling Club’s pavilion tonight, when a large gathering met to celebrate an important anniversary of one of the Dominion’s most celebrated bowlers, the veteran Mr William Carswell, of the Taieri club. Mr Carswell has a list of successes in bowling championships probably unequalled in New Zealand. His first big honour was achieved 50 years ago, in 1888, when he played third in the rink which won the New Zealand rinks championship, and his latest success was in 1938, when he won the champion of champions singles of the Dunedin centre. The president of the centre, Mr S. Devereux, presided, and among those present were members of the Dominion council and many past and present champions. To mark Mr Carswell’s remarkable prowess during a period exceeding half a century, Dunedin bowlers presented him with a wallet containing a substantial sum of money.
