AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS. WAIRARAPA ELIMINATION CONTESTS. The elimination contests last night to find the amateur wrestling champions for the year 1938 were some of the finest seen in Masterton. Falls were few and the referee, Mr Fred Morley, had to decide several finals on very close points. All the decisions were popular. Five holders of titles defended them. Four were successful in retaining their titles for another year. The Featherston Club obtained three, Masterton three and Eketahuna one. Dryden was unopposed in the heavy class. Following are the results in the different classes: — Bantam, Bst. 111 b.: W. Chaseland (Featherston) Bst. 61b. defeated R. Hancock (Masterton), Bst. 81b.; W. Benton (Featherston) ’ Bst. 71b. defeated C. Neill (Featherston) Bst. 71b. In the final Chaseland won after a very hard contest with Benton. Feather, 9st. 81b.: A. Nielsen (Eketahuna) 9st. • 71b. defeated D. Jensen (Featherston) 9st. 71b.; Lowe (Featherston) 9st. 71b. defeated T. Duffy (Featherston) 9st. 71b.; and Nielsen, the holder Of the title succeeded in retaining it against Lowe. Lightweight, lOst. 51b.: G. Wenden (Featherston) lOst. lib. defeated R. McGlashan (Eketahuna) lOst. 51b.; A. Nielsen 9st. 71b. defeated V. Teßay (Masterton) lOst. lib. In the final Wenden (holder) defeated Nielsen. Welter, list. 41b. E. Norris (Eketahuna) list, beat D. Carlyon (Featherston) list, lib.; Wenden (Featherston) defaulted to R. Sutherland (Masterton). The latter then met Norris in the final and after one of the best bouts of the evening Sutherland was given the decision and retained the title. Middle, 12st. 61b. I. Sutherland (Masterton) list. 81b. defeated J. Price (Featherston) 12st. 21b.; T. Nielsen (Masterton) list. 121 b. won by default from R. Sutherland. The final between I. Sutherland and T. Nielsen was a grim hard tussle ending in favour of Sutherland. Light-heavy, 13st. 91b.: H. Hill (Masterton) 12st. 21b. succeeded in defeating T. Reed (Featherston) 13st. 21b., in the only round for this class. Heavy, over 13st. 91b.: J. H. Dryden (Featherston) the only entrant, was declared champion heavy-weight for 1938. The following champions will represent the Wairarapa at the Wellington Provincial Championships next Saturday:—Feather, 9st. 81b., A. Nielsen (Eketahuna); lightweight, lOst. 51b., G. Wenden (Featherston); welter, list. 4 lb., R. Sutherland (Masterton); lightheavy, 13st. 91b., H. Hill (Masterton); heavy, over 13st. 91b., J. H. Dryden (Featherston).
