Wairarapa Standard Published Tri-weekly, Price Id. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 13,1886. Our Dairy Factories.

We sincerely hope that our Wairarapa farmers will support the dairy factories this season to the utmost of their power. Year by year we are gaining experience as to their management, and many difficulties have been overcome. Some experiences have not been pleasant, but this is tbe case with all new ventures, and it would have been most surprising if our local factories had not participated in some losses. But the fault has been really in want of {support. Though the capital was no doubt too small to start with, yet the shares were not taken up as they should have been by tbe farmers them • selves. They did not show that spirit of enterprise which was anticipated, and the difficulty of carrying the establishment of our dairy factories to a successful issue was increased. Considering what has been done in America for many years past we have wondered at the supineness of the farmers of New Zealand. It is true that several factories have been made to pay good dividends in this colony, but it has only been through an indomitable spirit of perseverance on the part of a few. Many farmers take up shares in companies for very shames sake Still they have not lost anything by it; on tbe contrary they have been saved a large amount of labor, and found a market close at hand for their milk, with a cheque at certain seasons for all that they have sent in. They have reaped a benefit notwithstanding all their grumbling, and if they would take heart and resolve upon supporting their respective factories to the best of their ability, they would realise a handsome profit upon their milk business and do good to the community at large.
