Suggested Reciprocity!

The Victorian Woolgrowers’ Association has proposed that if the United States will admit colonial wools duty free, the colonies will consent to take American kerosene on similar terms. At present the colonies receive an immense quantity of American goods of one kind or another, bat probably kerosene is the most important item. The total du./ (6d per gallon) paid on kerosene imported to New Zealand last year amounted to £26,590, and in Victoria the duty is said to have amounted to £33,589. Altogether throughout Australia and New Zealand, something like £IOO,OOO a year is probably derived from duty on kerosene. On the other hand the United States duty on wool imported amounts to about 75 per cent, ad valorem. If colonial wool were admitted duty free to the United States a very large amount of it would be taken and used in the manufacture of cloths. Under such an arrangement, a large quantity of wool would be sent from this colony to the United States to our material benefit. It would be worth while taking the 6d duty off kerosene to secure such a result. We hope that success will attend the efforts being made by the Victorian Woolgrowers’ Association.
