Greytown Winter Entertainments.

The last of the series of entertainments inaugurated by the committee of the Wairarapa Institr to raise farms for that Institution came ci on Monday evening. The attend • ance was not so large as of late, but this ma ■ have been to some extent owing to a numbt • reserving an evening this week for the annua! OrcytowD Volunteer Soiree. The performers who came from a distance to take part on tl is occasion were Miss A. Tocker, Miss B. Gundy and Mr J. H. Parker, all of Feather'’ton. The programme was commenced with a well executed overture “ II Barbiere ” by Mrs Spratt and Miss Wyett. Mr Cuff sang " Powder Monkey Joe ” and being warmly enooree sang “The Newfoundland Dog.” Mr Hillier’s reading “ Our New Paving ” kept the audience convulsed with laughter. Miss A. looker rendered “ The Blue Alsatian Mountains,” with much taste, and she re ceived a most pronounced and prolonged sneered, to which she responded with “ The Reign ef the Boses,” and again received the warm plaudits of the audience. A pretty piano duet, played by Miss A. and V. Fuller was nicely played and encored, the (air performers receiving a couple of bouquets from the front seats. Miss B. Candy, wfae has a sweet contralto voice, sang “ Shall I Wear a White Bose ” in a charming manner and was encored, receiving also a bouquet in the midst of the applause. Mr E. A. Cox, sang " The Last Bose of Summer,” but it was rather a heavy task for him. He was encored, and was very happy in his next song “ The Midshipmite.” Mr Parker, who is a professional pianist gave, in his playing of the “ Carnival de Venice," quite a feast. He is a brilliant player and ho did not fail on this occasion to charm the ears of his hearers and keep their eyes rivetted upon the dexterous and delicate movement of his fingers. He was encored. The duet" Slowly and Softly” by the Misses Wyett was nicely sang and they received an encore. " Wonders and Mu rmera ” was the title of a recitation by Mr C. W. Hornblow, which elicited an encore, and he replied with another;" How to Crown a Joke." Miss Tocker again appeared and sang " The Convent Bell ” in a very telling manner and was encored; she replied with " The Songs of Otbar Tears ” and was loudly applauded (or it. Mr M. G. Tally brought the programme to a close by singing “ Miss Hooligan's Christmas Cake ” and being a humorous song and sung in Mr Tally’s usual lively style, he was encored. Mr W. C. Cuff just before this song, came forward and announced that this entertainment was the last of the series and said that the committee of the Institute desired hi m publicly to thank the performers who had at different times come forward to entertain the audience, and their thanks were especially due to those ladies and gentlemen who had come from a distance to take part. He also thanked the Town Lands Trust for their kindness in allowing the hall to bo used free of cost, and Mr Jorgensen, the custodian of the hall, for the liberal spirit in which he had acted. Lastly he thanked the large audiences that had from time to time assembled and had thns enabled the committee to replenish the shelves of the Institute with useful books. In conclusion, Mr Caff said that a few more entertainments would be held, bat the pro* needs would be devoted to the purchase of uniforms for the cadet corps. He hoped a liberal support would be given to this move, ment also.
