The Gun Club

This Club held its eeoond meeting ol the season at Oirterton on Saturday afternoon. Had the Committee ol the Gun Club have known that the football match was to have taken ulace on that day they would not have fixed the 21st instant for their match, but having done so it was scarcely possible to alter their arrangements without inconvenience to some of their members. However, there was a fair muster of the shooting members and some good shooting was the result. Mr E. ii. Ouokeridge provided an excellent dinner at the White Kari and full justice was done to his efforts. In the first match Messrs P, F. Tanored ind E. U. Jones tied. Mr Jones would probably have proved the victor but he lost one shot by having his gnu at half cock. In tiring off Mr Tanored hit his mark and Scored a win. In this match Mr T. Grace obtained third honors. Messrs Scale anti Buckeridge coming next ami Mr N. Grace last. In the second match Mr Tanored and Mr N. Grace were ties, hut as Mr Grace elected to take second money the first place was assigned to Mr T'siiered. In the third match Ur Taucred, who happened to bo in good form on this occasion, proved the winner. Messrs B. Uuclteiidge and U. Goodin and N. Grace Being for second place. In shooting off Mr N. Grace secured the second place, Mr T. Grace also competed. Although the weather was not very propitious, still the party enjoyed themselves «nd some gentlemen from Mastertou were ranch disappointed by arriving 100 late to see the sport. The club will hold its next levee at Masterton to suit the convenience of the Masterton members. After the Masterton match, which will be shortly announced, arrangements will be nude (or the

Featherstou match. Die numbers' roll is being raiiiulj iiiciciiM.ii, itua mo Club arid tb >« tljr announce their November progn.iuiuc which will be carefully arranged by the beat local authorities on wing shooting in the district. The stakes will be valuable and the lo'.aliaator may be probably brought into requisition if the members generally approve of tl • idea. The Wairarspn Jockey Club h»a vciy kindly and considerately promised to give every facility to the Club (o carry out its programme during the spring racing carnival week, and the meeting will doubtless be one of the most important of the kind yet held in the colony. At the match on Saturday Mr C. Higgins, the Secretary, was in bis usual place aa scorer aud stakeholder. Mr B. R. Jones, the referee to the Club, did his duty to the evident satisfaction of all the shooters ; and Mr John Blaine, the trapper, received the compliments of the party for the painstaking aud efficient manner in which he attended to bis most important and, in some cases, rather difficult duties. An experienced trapper is an acquisition to all matches, as much depends upon his effisiency. The Saturday's meeting, though held on an unfortunate day, will not soon be forgotten by tbe participators, aud as the Pastoral Oround is eminently suited (or the purpose, tbe members will sak tbe committee to arrange (or another Carterton meeting at an early date. Mr Kimberley, the Treasurer, has kindly placed his property at tbe disposal of the Club for any pigeon shooting at Oreytowu, barring tbe big match. The Secretary informs ns that he will shortly try to arrange with some boys to catch sparrows for a sparrow match to be included in the Masterton programme.
