L 95. Agreeably with your mstmntions I have provided furniture and improved the accommodation of the office for ' oci cil meetings at a total cost of LSO Is. I have been unable to hn»e the tollhouse at Wiiiohiua removed to the Reserve as the limit ('.10) is not sufficient for the work. I have not called for public tenders, but have made enquiries from parties usually undertaking that class ol work and find that LlB or L2O will remove the building, erect a chimney and repair the ground at the near corner where the building would be safe from floods. Contracts No 81 and IXI of Kawhatu bridle track have (been completed and finally dealt w oh. A requisition will be forwarded to the Got eminent for payment of tIM rot). 11l

MB SEXTOS’* APPLICATION FOE EXTENSION OF LEASE HUBDNUIOEANOI BESXBVE. This matter was deferred until next meet* iog of the Council. WAIOHINE BIVEB PBOTECTIVB WORKS. This matter was left in the bands of tha Public Works Committee with power to aot. THE WAIOHINE TOLLHOUSE. The letting of the Waiobin* Beeerve and Tollhouse was, on the motion of Cr Martin seconded by Ct H. Bunny left in the bands oi the Chairman and Cr Bochanan. HABBISOTON'S CONTRACT. The application of W. Harrington for an extension of time to fulfil bis contract was granted to three months on tha proposition of Cr Tolly seconded by Cr Martin. MATAEAWA BBIDQB. Cr Buchanan moved and Cr Banov seconded that Mi King prepare some rough plans of a bridge. Carried. WAINUIOEU GLADSTONE BOAD. Cr H. B. Bunny moved that the Council take steps to have the works proceeded with on this road to commence on that section between the river and Westmere dam and that Mr King make the necessary arrange, ments.

Cr Buchanan* asked if the ratepayers generally would approve of this special piece of road being gone on with first; he would at any rate second Cr Bunny's motion as be thought it was only a reasonable request. The Chairman said that more than the £4OO granted from the Taratahi-Carterton, No 8 Ward, would be required at any rate, and the Government Loan to Local Bodice Bill had just been passed, so that there was every chance of this road being completed in a short time. But the question was, would the spending of the L4OO affect the vote that might be needed to complete the road. Cr 11. B. Bunny said could not the poll be taken before they spent the £4OO. He considered that the interests of the whole of the settleis in that part were to get into Carterton by the best route as speedily as possible. The £4OO bad been guaranteed by this Hoad Beard without any Interest between Westmure and the bridge would be the best point to start with. Cr H. Bunny ; “ Then let the money be spoilt.”

The motion was carried, Mr King to prepare plane, Ac. jacksom’s creek. Cr H. B. Bunny said Jackson’s Creek Kaiwbata track culveit could be put in repair for about £6. It was resolved that Tweeddale get the work done. .MAKTINBOBOUIIH-FIHAUA ROAD, Cr Tully moved that tenders be called for the construction of two bridges on the Martiuborough-Pahaua Road. Cr H. R. Bunny said if tbe £3OO voted by the Featherstoo Road Board would be absorbed by the works in progress, it was quite right to eecure .the vote under tbe lata Roads and Bridges Construction Act at onoe, by putting the work in baud. Mr King said plans could be prepared in a fortnight. Seconded by Cr Phillips and carried. WAIOHINE BRIDGE. Cr Phillips said be wished to refer the works committee with out notice to the fact that the water should not be allowed to be on tbe Waiohine Bridge, that in his opinion a thin coating cf gravel should be put ou the bridge as in its present state there was great danger to life, and tbe timber would be preserved by a thin layer of gravel. Tauhereoikau Bridge had stood for years with the gravel ou it Cr U. R. Bunny questioned as to whether the gravel would not rot the timber. Cr Buchanan had an ilea that possibly a thick coating of gravel might be best. Cr U. Bunny thought Tauherenikau Bridge had a thick e mting of gravG. Mr Kirg iK? engineer, in reply in Ora said tbe Waioinoe Bridge could not -U i id more than lOOlbs l > the ruble foot as it would be too much strain on the trusses. DS'iiNKi'.it'i ttrpoar. I have the honor to submit the following brief report on the Pubic Winks of tbe WairatapaWfit Couotj ; MAUTlNnonorilH I'AK U A lIIUS. Contract No G m th'- roil is maetically completed. Severn! slight i n i>■ em, uts to the side slopes, tho rem >v il of o levs.mil slips, culling down an i cVnn -g w-iv i sin ill quantity of scum, and ;m a ija i o uof v > or three of the embaokmeo'a hj in? th- only Works to be done. In tho event of those works beiug done Ihj ive mri ;g Ii i 1 ran Mr Haggerty ou th i 27th i i-i. Contract No 7. O i tnis -o ’*r nt about two thirds of the earthwork is done So far the . works are carried out in a workmanlike manner. There is no limner ft culve.ts o i the ground, and it would hi difficult at present to cart timber over the recently farmed parts of the roid I w nil i recommend that an extension of time for th • completion of his contract be granted to Mr Harrington, as compelling him to complete his contract forthwith would greatly damage tho road, aud be very expensive to the contractor, Wainuioiu to Kaiwhataßridle Track. Contract No. 3 on this track is completed in a satisfactory manner. On Contract No. 2, tbe formation is about completed mid the contractor is proceeding with the construction of the culverts. I expect the contract to be entirely finished in about n foil night, Tbe works so far, ou this contract, are ei' eptionilly we ll d' ne.

WAINCIOBU BRIDGE. The trusses are hung, and the sraffoldiug is taken down, the joists and lateral braces are fixed in position, and the ii'ljn. t iimt to cumber Ac. of the trusses is being proceeded with. In about three weeks the whole ol the works will be finished. Considering the character of the road over which the material for this bridge had to be carried, as well as the rough weather and the flooded elated the river during the progress of the works, the advanced stage to which the works have been pushed forward is very satisiaet jry. Agreeably with your instructions I hive prepared plans, fto , for two 23 feet span bridges to be areoted on the Martin borough to Pahaua Road, the completion of these were somewhat delayed, as the field notes in my possession were hardly detailed enough to enable me to complete them without a further examination of the sites. ■iw BTC LAWS. Or Phillips aeked to bare some (daoeed reinstated in the bye laws which (be u.ittee bad ezpnnged. Agreed to. The Council adjonmed until the Saturday in October.
