KIMBERLEY GOLD-FIELDS.
We (New Zealand Times) are indebted to tbe courtesy of Mr Scddou, for the following extract from a letter received by him from an acquaintance who left New Zealand for Kimberley abont three monthe ago “ Debbt, 34th Jane, 1885. "Dear Friend,—l arrived here at tbe beginning of the week in good health. Tbe diggings are not as they are reported. About 800 ounces of gold have been obtained, but all in shallow ground—at the head of little gullies go* by scraping with a knife. The prospectors have left the field, and are here in Derby. One of them, Slattery, by name, was in oar camp, and we bad n long yarn with him for two or tnree hoars, nad he told as that if he had to go op again he would have to prospect other places, as the old ones arc worked out, and he did not know for a certainty whereto get a pennyweight of gold ; so auybody that goes up will have to prospect for himself, if you know anybody wishing to come try and stop him till better news is beard. Wo are going to make a sltrt tomorrow and prospect for ourselves. The distance is aboat 400 miles. Some are going up from here; some are iryiug to sell their horses (for which they ask a high price) to go back, while others without horses and means, say they will go with wu‘‘elharrows and handoms ; but whether they will reach the diggings M-not is hard to siy. I think it will he a long time before ou hear from me ugiin, ncciuse there is no means of communication." ANOTHER ACCOUNT. ALL GETTING GOLD. Melb uirnk. Augusts. The Government Beside ut at Derby reports under date 261h July, that all at Kimbeiley are getting gold, and exjwiienoed miners consider the prospects favourable. Much gold| is understood to he in diggers’ hands.
