A THOUSAND DEATHS FROM STARVATION. SOCIALIST RIOTS AT AMSTERDAM, TERRIBLE LOSS OF LIFE.
Amsterdam, July 27. Serious riots caused by Socialists occurrel here yesterday. Tbe troops were called out to aid tbe police, aud fired repeatedly on tbe mob, who bad erected barricades in some of tbe principal streets. Fourteen Socialists were killed, and 34 wounded, while 40 policemen, who bora the brunt of tbe contest with the rioters, were injured more or less seriously. Order wss at length restored, and to-day the city is quiet. July 28.
No further Socialist disturbances have occurred here, and perfect quiet has been restored. Latest accounts sbow that 25 Socialists wers killed ia the recent riots.
London, July 27. The Earl of Rosebery has informed M. Waddington, French Ambassador in London, that bis Government will not consent to any departure from the existing understanding concerning tbe New Hebrides. A thousand deaths have occurred in Labrador, British North America, from starvation.
It ia reported that Mr Gladstone will go on a yachting ernisa in Italy after tbe opening of Parliament, and will winter abroad.
The barque Crowntborpe, well known in tbe trade with the colonies, has been abandoned, having become dismantled during heavy weather. A portion of the crew b*s been aaved, and landed at Cape Town. At the time of the disaster the Crowntborpe was bound from London to Brisbane. It is believed that Lord Randolph Churchill will take office in the new Ministry as Chancellor to the Exchequer, and will act as leader of the Conservative party in the House of Commons.
Arrived—Hurunai, from Wellington (23rd April); Dunedin, from Oamain (4th May). It is anticipated that a little new blood will be infused into the Conservative Cabinet now being formed. If tbe Marquis of Londonderry accepts the position "of Viceroy of Inland, Sir Michael Hicks-Beach will become Chief Secretary for Ireland, Lord Randolph Churchill leading in the House of Commons during Sir Michael’s absence. Viscount Ciaubrook may possibly take tbe office of Secretary for the Colonies. This morning’s Times state that 3500 Indians and Esquimsa have perished in Latra* dor from hunger and cold, 15,00 more are in peril.
