A COLONIAL SCULLER DEFEATED. ANOTHER RUSSO-AFGHAN DIFFICULTY. London, July 19. A sculling match took place to-day between Perkins aud Kemp, of Sydney, for £2OO. Perkins won easily. July 20. It is announced that the Marquis of Darlington has declined to join the Marquis of Salisbury in tbe formation of a Coalition Ministry, bnt at the same time has intimated that be would accord his support in the House to a Conservative administration. In tbe divorce suit, Crawford v. Crawford and Dilke, tbe evidence of experts has shown that tbe handwriting of the several anonymous letters! received by Mr Crawford was similar to that of tbe respondent, Mrs Crawford. Mrs Bogerson has testified to having received a confession of adultery from Sir Charles Dilke. Russia threatens to occupy Fort LazareS, alleging tbe British occupation of Port Hamilton as a pretext. The English fleet in Chinese waters has been ordered to proceed to Vladivostock. Intelligence is to hand from Central Asia that a difficulty has arisen between tbe British and Russian Commissioners for tbe delimitation of the Afghan frontier, who are now at Khoja Saleh, on the Oxus. The Russian Commissioners claim a tract of fertile country extending lor twelve miles along tbe banks of that river, and tbe demand is objected to by tbe British representatives. The difficulty has been referred by the Commissioners to their respective Governments at St Petersburg and London.
July 21. The cricket match Australia versus All England, has resulted in a victory for the Home team in one innings, with 104 runs to spare.
New Zealand mutton, weighing per carcase 051b to 701b, is worth 5d per lb, and prime New Zealand lambs are worth, ner carcase, 6fd per 5 lb.
Sydney, July 21. The American barque Chasca which left New York on 25th January (or Wellington, New Zealand pat in here to day. Bio de Janeiro, July 19. The Shaw, Savill and Albion Co.’s s.s. Doric, from Lyttelton, left here on the afternoon oi the 17tb instant, for London. Her cargo of frozen meat was in good condition.
Melbourne, July 20. The Colonial Treasurer, Mr Gillies, introduced hta Financial Statement in the Legislative Assembly this evening. He estimates the revenue at £6,970,000, and the expenditure at £6,910,000 ; the revenue for the past financial year, £6,420,000 ; and the expenditure, £6,620,000; the actual suiplus at the commencement of the current financial year being £330,000. Mr Gillies proposes to increase the ai valorem duties upon woollen goods, piece woollens to 20 per cent, and made-up woollens to 30 per cent.
July 21. In his Financial Statement, last night, the Treasurer showed that the net income from railways was £61.3.000, which returns 4 2 per cent on capital. The Hobson’s Bay Railway is returning 7J per cent. The Treasurer stated ilia* the Put Office was sliowiug an annual loss of £109.0u0.
