Pretty Girls or Plain Ones.
The great burning question of the present day is simply this : Which does it pay us better to raise—the pretty girls or the pi .in ones ? Let us examine the evidence as it stands. The London girl, who skipped off with her Pa’s fiat headed, Jumbo legged coatby the other day, is described as being very pretty indeed. The Parisian eocieiy belle, who poisoned her husband is spoken of by the papers as b-ing decidedly pretty. The Berlin bride, who became stage struck and joined a strolling theatrical company, is reported to be exceedingly pretty. The New York maiden, who drowned herse f because the new panon dec.ared be comd
•• never be more than a brother to her,’’ was acknowleged by ell to be as pretty as a picture. The pretty girl, therefore, instead of being a thing of beauty, and a joy for ever, is frequently nothing better than a delusion and snare. On the other hand, it is the plain girl who is never found breaking her lather’s heart with sorrow, or her husband s bead with the butt end of the broom It is the plain girl who is never fished out by the Water Police, with salt water streaming from her clothes, and who is never admitted into our gorgeous dead bouse as a dsmnitioii dead body. It is the plain girl who, although she may bsvs an aching bsart, has a level head. It is the plain girl with the png-nose, freckled face, and enm•on hair, who never causes the tongue of wikhl to waggle a single wag. In spits of alt this, however, we are qmte agreeable to M the rest of the world monopolize the plain girts. We prefer the martyr’s rols, and •re qnite willing to be sacrificed at the •brine of hsenty seventy times a day until father orders.
