The Railway Accident in Tasmania.
The following interesting account of the terrible railway accident near Hobart m the Jubt., was telgrapbed to the Sydney Daily Ti ilegraph, and appears in the ssue of that pap er on the ist inst The a lost serious railway acciient that has ever occurred in Tasmania look place last nigh ton the main tine of railway. As the spec al train conveying the Hobart contingent at' the visitors from tke opening of the Fingi d line was proceeding to Hobart and when about three milesnortb of Brington, at al x>ut half past 10 p.m . a violent bumping i vas felt; the carriages swayed over on one si> le, and the train overturned and was com| detely smashed up. The passengers, com prising the Premier (Dr Agnew), the Attorn ey-Generai (Hon J. S. Dodds), Treasurer (Hon W. H. Burgess) all the city aldermen, > epreseatatives of the paess, and a large nun ibtr of leading citizens, were all thrown violently among the debris of the broken carriages. The night, though fine, was dark. Fire were lighted, and the work of rescuing I he passengers was commenced. Many of thei n narrow lye scaped being burned to death th rough a quantity of kerosene catching fire and lighting the debris. The dead body of John Bradshaw, 27 years of age, the engit icldriver, was found. The body was driven rq ;bt into the ground, and had to be dag (out. The fireman was found with one leg cut off. Dr. Agnew, Mr. Dodds, Mr. Burgess, and Mr. F. H. Wise, Steamboat propriett >r. appeared to be very severely injured, being found among the debris, Most of the passeng era were more or less injured. The crash of 1 .he overturned train which appeared to hay<: gone off the rails, was heard at Brighton, three miles off. Assistance was soon forth coming, a special train with ambulance coi ps, surgeons, an appliances for relief arriving in an hour and a half. The sufferers 1 Mere got into it, and a start made for Hot* irt, that place being reached at 3 o’clock in the morning.
